Sensory Garden Reopens at Market Place with Breaking Barriers NW Partnership

22nd May 2025

The Sensory Garden, which has recently moved from the roof of Market Place to a new, more accessible location, officially reopened on 7th April. This special garden offers an outdoor experience for everyone, with a focus on creating a sensory-rich environment for those with sensory needs.

Filled with plants that can be touched, sniffed, admired and even tasted, the Sensory Garden offers a unique space for individuals of all ages and abilities. Designed to be a welcoming environment for families, the garden particularly caters to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

In collaboration with Breaking Barriers NW, the garden aims to foster inclusivity and provide a safe, stimulating space for the community. Through this partnership, the garden will be open to the public from 11am to 2pm on sunny days throughout the summer, offering a peaceful retreat for all visitors.

Additionally, a small garden shack will be available during these hours to ensure that everyone can enjoy the full experience. The garden provides a sensory escape where visitors can connect with nature, unwind and explore the different textures, scents and tastes of the plants.

Steph Sherratt, CEO and Founder of Breaking Barriers NW, commented, “We are so excited to be part of this wonderful initiative. The Sensory Garden offers a unique space where individuals, especially those with SEND, can engage with nature in an accessible and enjoyable way. This partnership reflects our commitment to promoting inclusivity and well-being in the community. We hope that families and individuals of all backgrounds feel welcomed and supported here.”

To help support the upkeep of the garden and keep it blooming, donations are warmly welcomed.
